Direct Care & Support

The Direct Care & Support Program of Hope for the Elderly Uganda is designed to address the immediate and practical needs of elderly persons and their dependents, particularly those living in vulnerable conditions. Many of our elderly beneficiaries face isolation, inadequate nutrition, poor housing, limited mobility, and lack of access to healthcare. This program ensures that they receive compassionate, consistent, and life-enhancing care that restores dignity and improves their quality of life. By providing hands-on assistance, we bridge the gap between urgent needs and long-term well-being, while fostering a sense of belonging and community.

Program Components

  1. Home Visits and Companionship
    • Regular visits to the homes of elderly beneficiaries to provide emotional support, companionship, and practical assistance.
    • Volunteers and staff engage in friendly conversations, reading, prayer, light household chores, and monitoring general well-being.
    • Helps reduce loneliness and social isolation, which are common among the elderly.
  2. Nutritional Support
    • Monthly distribution of food baskets containing essential staples such as maize flour, beans, rice, cooking oil, and nutritious supplements.
    • Hot meal events organized periodically to bring elderly community members together, fostering social interaction while ensuring balanced nutrition.
  3. Medical Outreach Camps and Referrals
    • Organizing community medical camps offering free check-ups, blood pressure and sugar monitoring, vision screening, and treatment for common illnesses.
    • Establishing referral systems with local health centers and hospitals to ensure elderly persons receive timely and specialized care.
  4. Provision of Assistive Devices
    • Supplying mobility and support devices such as walking sticks, wheelchairs, and crutches to improve independence.
    • Distributing reading glasses and hearing aids to enhance sensory capabilities and improve daily living.
  5. Distribution of Hygiene Items
    • Regular provision of essential hygiene items, including soap, bedding, mosquito nets, and adult diapers.
    • Promotes cleanliness, reduces the risk of infections, and improves overall comfort for elderly persons.
  6. Shelter Improvement
    • Construction or renovation of shelters for elderly persons living in unsafe or dilapidated housing.
    • Ensures safe, secure, and dignified living spaces that protect beneficiaries from harsh weather and hazards.
  7. Support to Dependents
    • Recognizing that many elderly persons are caretakers of grandchildren or other dependents, we provide targeted support such as school supplies, clothing, and nutritional aid.
    • This helps households remain stable and secure, while reducing the caregiving burden on elderly persons.
